Sky is the limit for an entrepreneur. Today we have Ajeet and Rajesh from Stork to talk about their online grocery store venture – http://stork.net.in/
Me: Sundar Rajan G S
Ajeet and Rajesh – Founders of Stork, online grocery store in Chennai
Me: Hi Ajeet, Rajesh, Welcome to the show on Coffee With Sundar. Can you please speak about yourself, your background and childhood days?
Ajeet: Both of us have done our graduation from NIT (REC) Kurukshetra. After degree, I worked with a few manufacturing (Daewoo Motors, Ford India) and IT companies before starting our own venture. I belong to a traditional govt job family. But parent being teacher, has helped me to take tough and own decisions. Grandfather being a traditional communist, made Carl Marx as one of my childhood heroes. I always feel myself as a worker defined by Marx
“Workers, you have nothing to lose but your chains”
I see major chain being our own thoughts & our own self defined limitations.
Rajesh: My father was in the civilian defense services and we had a thoroughly enjoyable childhood.I was always taught to be on my own , from 10th onwards till completing my Btech & PG Diploma in leather sector, I was in various parts of the country. It made me thoroughly independent and ready to face any situation. After working for a German company for almost 8 years, I started a company with 2 others, involved in the export of leather products. After meeting Ajeet, came the thought of doing something unique and different.
Me: How did you come across this business idea?
Ajeet : Business is not new to us. Last 7 years I am running my own software development company focused towards high end business solutions. Rajesh has his own leather export business. Last twoyears, I was involved in couple of small experiments in retail. On the same time Rajesh was looking beyond Leather export, as process was almost set and had quite a lot of free time. We met last year, after a gap of 16 years at Chennai.
After 1st few discussion we agreed to move with online grocery store. It took couple of months to tie different elements and start off.
Me: What makes your product unique in the market? Who are some of the other players in the space?
We see STORK as a platform which in future, will carry many products and services to customer. It would be a virtual marketplace. Apart from Grocery it would have gifts, flowers, stationery & so on. We decided to start with Grocery, it being one of toughest items. Online grocery stores have lot more failure than success story. So we though if are successful in grocery , our foundation is strong. We have a balanced approach. We built a fully integrated process ( ERP system) at the same time we spent lot of time to understand ground reality of grocery retail business. In fact we are learning many new things every day.
As far as competition is concerned, so far it seems Bigbasket (they don’t have operation at Chennai currently) is only serious player. After we launched Stork at Chennai, we see few more players have entered . Competition is always good for business, as it automatically makes you better, because you always try to be one step ahead of the competition. Darwins theory of “Survival of the fittest” will reign.
Me: You are currently focusing on Chennai? Do you plan to expand it to other regions?
We dream big. Yes, we plan to cover most tier -1 & 2 cities. But all this is going to be in a phased manner. We want to really establish a name for ourselves in Chennai first and iron out all operational deficiencies before expanding.
Me: How do you ensure that the quality and freshness of the products are maintained?
We supply all products to customer from our own ware house. It is to ensure, that we never compromise on product quality. As far as fresh Fruits and Vegetables are concerned, we have an exclusive arrangement with a wholesale trader. Our model (we get order 1 day before delivery) helps us to serve customer fresh.
Readers, stay tuned for part 2.
