Coffee With Aditya! – A Googler & Blogger

18 January 2008 16 Comments

Hi All,

At CWS (Coffee With Sundar :-)), I have another very special person to have chat over Coffee!

Welcome Aditya Kulkarni! He is my collegue at Google. But what is more important and relevant for todays chat is that he is a blogger! And a very famous blogger with a big fan following him! Incase you havent seen his blogs visit: http://pointlesseverything.com/blog/. It is one of the funniest blog on web!

Its a great previledge to have Aditya Kulkarni with us today!

Its Coffee With Aditya!

Me: Sundar Rajan G S, AK: Aditya Kulkarni

Me: Whats your blog all about? What is the type of content that you blog? Who are your target audience?
AK: I resent your insinuation that an Aristotelian classification of creative content can be made on the basis of dialectic judgments.
AK: Sounds dense, no? Well, that’s what I do on my blog – Write stuff that looks like it makes sense, give out advice on things I don’t understand, write stories that are completely pointless, and write poems that rhyme at any cost.

Me: Do you have a pseudonym or do you write with your own name?
AK: I usually write under my own name, but sometimes, some of my split personalities post under my name too.

Me: I clearly see that you have a passion to blog. When did it all start?
AK: It’s telling stories that I love. I first started writing back in College. It was not so much writing as it was participating in mass flame-wars where I spamed our college mailing list with silly stories defaming folks. As you can imagine, this got me into a lot of trouble, but I enjoyed it tremendously. And that led me to create this blog.

Me: Why do you blog?
AK: I was going to say something like ‘It is the true expression of my creativity’ or some fake thing like that, but the true reason is that I like making fun of people (including of myself), and what better place than the internet to put it up where everyone can see it?

Me: Have you ever had a comment that made you very happy or very embarrassed?
AK: I am in the process of starting a new religion called ‘ Adityaism’ with the central tenet of ‘Whatever!’. I’ve even come up with an anthem for it. (The religion is still in Beta, but send me mail if you’d like to be notified when it launches). Some folks on my blog have had deep religious discussions with me, and that makes me very very happy. Eg:
KN: “Does Adityaism include finding dates with hot gals? I’m all for it!! ”
Aditya Kulkarni: “Sure! Adityaism is all for finding dates with hot gals .We’ll even make a religious holiday for it, don’t worry! ”

ME: What is the biggest impact that your blog has had on followers of your blog?
AK: Wasting time! That, incidentally is one of the goals of my blog, so it’s great!

ME: What is the use of personal blogs? Is it worth an effort to read personal blogs?
AK: I don’t like personal blogs where all the author can talk about is himself/herself. I don’t care what you ate for lunch and I certainly don’t care if it was raining, dammit!

ME: There is a lot of defaming statements and comments made in blogosphere in general. Do you think blogs should be moderated? If so, who should moderate it? If not, why do you say so & What about comments on the blog?
AK:What? Making defaming statements and outrageous exaggerations ridiculing people is THE VERY ESSENCE of blogging. I certainly don’t think it should be moderated in any way. Many people think this is a freedom-of-speech-issue, but I happen to think it’s a having-fun-at-the-expense-of-others issue. Very much for it.

ME: What is the whole deal about getting users to read one’s blog? Did you ever do that? Is it a bad practise?
AK: If anything, I think bloggers are not aggressive enough to get people to read their blogs. I would be in favour of a law, hypothetically speaking, that allowed bloggers to threaten people at gun point and made them read the blog.

ME: Should blogging be considered an art? Like playing an instrument or singing? etc.
AK: I don’t subscribe to the 21st century interpretation of art which is usually along the lines of: ” Art is stuff that most people don’t understand”. I believe in the traditional definition, which is more like ‘Art is side effect of someone’s passion’. By that definition, if you are passionate about writing, your blog qualifies as art, while buying MF Hussains to hang in your house doesn’t make you an art-lover.

ME: What is your advice for young bloggers?
AK: “Send me money” πŸ™‚
