Kadhalai Thaedinaan

17 July 2010 2 Comments

Hi All..

This is my 6th tamil poem.. I have tried to use legendary Indian mythological figures symbolically in this piece and I liked the poem personally πŸ™‚

Oscar Wilde once said… ”Men always want to be a woman’s first love – Women like to be a man’s last romance.” The poem talks about a Man’s quest for love.. Sometimes.. a very long quest.. πŸ™‚ till he finally finds his true love.. Here goes the poem.. Kaadhalai Thaedinaan.. (In search of his love) the context is given in the end..

Here goes the context for the poem.. A young man is in search of his first love Damayanthi… Damayanthi is the wife of king Nala.. He is able to find her right in front of his eyes.. But he is very shy to express his love.. Even be fore he realizes.. She just vanishes..

Kaadhalai thaedinaan..
Than Damayanthiyai thaedinaan..
Kann yedhirae thondrinaal..
AvaLidam solla thayanginaan..
AvaLO maraindhaal..

He continues to search for his love.. This time.. it is no longer Damayanthi.. He thinks his ideal woman is Shakunthala.. who is the daughter of Vishwamitra and Menaka.. This time he overcomes his fear and expresses his love to her.. But he is afraid to talk about his world to the rest of the world.. (Pirar => Others) Shakunthala.. just leaves him.. Which woman wants to marry a man who is not even confident enough to accept his love in public..

Kaadhalai thaedinaan..
Than Shakunthalaiyai thaedinaan..
KaN yedherae thondrinaal..
AvaLidam sonnan..
Aanaal.. pirar-idam solla bhayandhaan…
AvaLO maruthaaL..

He continues to search for his dream woman.. As you would have expected.. it is no longer Shakunthala.. πŸ™‚ This time it is Ahalya.. Ahalya was the wife of a rishi by name Gautama.. She appeared in front of him.. He fell in love with her.. This time he didnt want to make the mistake of the earlier two occasion.. he wanted to express his love.. both to Ahalya and to the rest of the world..

His love knew no bounds.. It is so full of energy like waves of the ocean which never tire.. He lost himself in her smile.. He goes in search of her with his poem..

But when he goes to her.. he finds that his ocean of joys is taken away by Agastya. Legend says that Agastya drank the entire sea.. With a lot of difficulty he forgot Ahalya.. He put on a brave smile on his face.. And continued to search for his love..

Kaadhalai thaedinaan..
Than Ahalayai thondrinaal..
AvaL punnagaiyil maraindhaan
Thannayae marandhaan..

Ooyadha alaigaL pol thondriyadhu ivan kaadhal..
AvaL-idamum.. pirar-idamum Than kadhalai solla..
Oru kavidhai yezhudhi sendran…
Aanal.. Ivan asai samudhirathai oru Agastyan aLLivitaan..
Marakka mudiyaamal Marandhaan…
Punnagai Anindhaan..
Kaadhalai Thaedinaan..

The man continued to search for his love with a lot courage & energy.. He searched for Jaanaki.. Jaanaki is none other than Sita, wife of Lord Rama.. But he couldnt even find a Mandodhari.. who is the wife of Ravana..  He searched for a white bird of peace.. A white pigeon.. But he couldnt even find a dark fish in the process.. He didnt give up.. He continued the quest for his dream one..

Kaadhalai thaedinaan..
Thunindhu thunindhu thaedinaan..
Jaanakiyai thaedinaan..
Oru Mandodhariyum maattavillai..
Oru veLLai nira puraa-vai thaedinaan..
Oru kuyilin nira suraa-vum sikkavillai..
Muyarndhu muyarndhu thaedinaan..
Than kaadhaliyai thaedinaan..

The man continues to search for his love.. This time he decides to enter the Swayamvaram – A mythological game where the winner gets to win the lady’s hand.. To his surprise.. Sri Rama who broke the unbreakable Shiva’s bow to win Sita, himself is waiting in the queue.. In today’s world where even Lord of Srirangam is getting rejected by girls.. he realized he had very limited chance to win his Sridevi..

Kaadhalai thaedinaan..
Than swapna sundariyai Thaeda.. Swayamvarthil yeranginaal…
Siva-Dhanussai murikka Sriramachandra-rae kaathirurkiraar..
Sriranga naadharayai vendaam yendru sollum indha kaalathil..
Indha siriyanukku yedhada Sridevi..

He continued his quest for love.. He searched for all round the world.. but he couldnt find his love.. Here is a beautiful line.. which says he searched for his love in Kashmir.. But his Kanya kumari (beautiful girl) is not there.. πŸ™‚

Kaadhali Thaedinaan..
Indha ulagathin moolai mudukkilum thaedinaan..
Kashmirilae thaedinaan..
Angillai ivan Kanya Kumari..

He continued to search for his love.. He heard a lady’s feeble voice from some where.. He has been hearing this voice for some time now.. This is the same voice which had been trying to avoid for ages.. It appeared as though she was waiting for him all these years.. He realized.. that she was his answer for his love’s quest.. She invited him with a hug and showered her love on him.. He fell in love with her.. Whatever he saw was appearing beautiful because of her.. Whatever he wrote.. he was just praising her…

Kaadhalai Thaedinaan..
Yengeyo oru oli kaetathu..
Sila naaLkal-aagave kaeta kural..
Pala naaLkalaaga.. evan kaeka marutha kural..
Ivanukkaagave kaathirundadhupol thondriyadhu..
Asaiyudan azhaithaL..
Pasamalarai poosiNaaL
Ivan kaadhal kelvi-yin badhil avaL
Paarkum idam yellam avaL kalai azhagu…
Korkum vaarthaigal yellam aval kalai mahimai..

The man’s quest was love was finally answered.. It appeared that the godess of Art herself had descended to the world to be his lover.. He searched for his love.. The kalai devi had appeared.. He searched for his love.. And he realized it was within him..

Kaadhalai thaedinaan..
Andha kalai devadhaiyae thondrinaaL
Kaadhalai thaedinaan..
AvanuLLe thondriyadhu..
O kalai kaadhalanae…
Un punidha kaadhal malarattum..

The narrator says.. O dear Kalai Kaadhala.. (Lover of art).. Let your pure love for art blossom..
