Kalai Kaadhala

20 June 2010 6 Comments
Hi All,
Update: changed from Kala Kadhalan to Kalai Kadhalan based on feedback.
Today I was listening to a few poems of Vaira Muthu on you tube.. And I wrote one of my own as well… Again, it happened spontaneously over a chat conversation with my cousin and I extended it later to make it into a poem..
This is my second poem in Tamil πŸ™‚ Half the words are english words.. πŸ™‚ So please adjust!  If you dont know tamil, I have written the explanation below..
Kalai Kaadhala

Concept-galai thedi.. un manasu alasa…
Subject-galai noki.. un kangazh paaya..
Pencil-um paper-um urasa urasa…
Black and white padam-gazhil,
Vannum vannumai kanavu kandaayei.. en kalai kadhala..

Idhenna Tamizh Kavidhaiya endru nee kekalam…
Oppu-kozhgiren..
Idhu sendamizh alla
Angilamum Alla
Kalaikku yedhada mozhi… en kalai kadhala…

Aridandhavan gyaani-aavan
Anubhavitthavan kalaigyan-aanan-endru
muthai sedhukinaan andha vaira muthu

Po! Un thedal thodarattum..
Anaithaiyum Arindhukozh..
Anubhavi..
Dharani Azhu..
Unannakuzh malarum indha pinju kalai-yin kai pidi..
Indha kalai-yai karai sethu vidu en kalai kaadhala…
Now let me translate.. πŸ™‚
Kalai Kadhala means Lover of Art..
Concept-galai thedi.. un manasu alasa… Your mind is searching constantly for the right concept to portray..
Subject-galai noki.. un kangazh paaya.. Your eyes are pouncing on the subject the moment they see the right one..
Pencil-um paper-um urasa urasa… Just as the pencil & the paper touch each other..
Black and white padam-gazhil,
Vannum vannumai kanavu kandaayei.. en kalai kadhala..
You started seeing colored dreams on a black & white image.. Oh my dear Kalai Kadhala..
Idhenna Tamizh Kavidhaiya endru nee kekalam… You might ask me – is this a tamil poem?
Oppu-kozhgiren.. – I accept
Idhu sendamizh alla – This is not in pure tamil..
Angilamum alla – It is not even angilum or English..

Kalaikku yedhada mozhi… en kalai kadhala…

Art transcends all languages.. Oh my dear kala kadhala..

Aridandhavan gyaani-aavan – The one one knows becomes the enlightened says Vairamuthu (A great tamil poet)

Anubhavitthavan kalaigyan-aanan-endru – The one who experiences becomes a kalaigyan or an artist..
muthai sedhukinaan andha vaira muthu – Such were pearls of wisdom from Vairmuthu..
Po! Un thedal thodarattum.. Go!!! Let your quest continue..
Anaithaiyum Arindhukozh.. Learn.. Seek knowledge..
Anubhavi.. Experience it..
Dharani Azhu.. Rule the world!
Unannakuzh malarum indha pinju kalai-yin kai pidi..
There is a small budding art which is growing with in you.. hold its hands!!!
Indha kalai-yai karai sethu vidu en kalai kaadhala… Help the kalai (art) reach the karai (shores)… Oh my dear lover of art!!

Interesting poetry, but is ‘pingu’ the pingu of doordarshan fame? πŸ™‚

Hey Vatsala.. it is not Pingu.. it is Pinju… Pinju is small… Probably cross lingual spelling mistake πŸ™‚

  • Vatsala said:

Ok, I got it, its “pinju” as in tender or small

‘Kala kaadhala’ sounds more like an illicit lover (‘kalla kaadhalan’) than art lover, which is ‘kalaikkaadhalan’.
