Kalinga Yuddham

21 November 2010 5 Comments

Hi all..

This is my 25th poem and it is based on an extremely influencial moment in the history of World Civilization.. The Kalinga War!  The war took place in 260 BC between the great Mauriyan King, Ashoka and the king of Kalinga – the modern day Orissa! This was on of the greatest invasion in the history of India till then with over 100,000 armed men waging a war.. But what makes it an influencial moment in the history? It was the first time a King, the conquerer of the war, the winner gets dejected with the victory.. Ashoka is believed to follow non-violence and Buddhism after this war! This sowed the seeds of peaceful co-existence in the war torn world!

Inspired by the poem – “Last Post” by Carol Ann Duffy and fascinated by Buddha, I write this poem on Kalinga war!

Let me set the context of the poem.. Ashoka, wins the war and looks back at the day.. Literally looks back! Every thing happens in reverse.. And eventually Ashoka questions if a poet can ever “re-write” the crime which he has committed and instantly decides to follow Buddha and pursue non-violence! It is a poetic imagination and certainly not factual..

Kalinga Yuddham

Raththa karaipadindha sooriyan..
ManjjaL-aai yezhundhu vandhaan..
Vetti yerindha thalai otti
mundam-aanavan nimirndhu nindraan…

VilluKuL.. aayiram AmbugaL paaindhana..
udalai saera.. Kurudhi aruvi yezhundhana..

saaga pirandha en padaigal..
vaazhum idaththukku nadandhaargaL..
villu ambugaLai vaiththu..
manaivikku muththam kuduthaargaL..

——— * — * —- * ———

seLippum sirippum niraindha naattil..
indru-oru kasappum veruppum nigazhgiradhae..
Kalinga-thil naDanadha kaLangathai
kavigyanaal thiruppi yezhudha mudiyaadhae…

Aiyoo..

Budhdhanae.. Budhdhane..
Arindha Budhdhanae…
YenakkuL yezhuvardharkku
yaen iththanai thaamadham..

Sidhdhane Sidhdhane..
Sindhiththa Sidhdhane..
Ahimsaiyai “thozhuvadharkku”
innodi-yae sammadham…

Here goes the translation..

Blood stained sun.. turns yellow..
The head of the headless man sticks to him and he gets up..
1000s of arrows goes back to the bow…
A blood “waterfalls” stands up to reach its body..
Armed men, who are born to be dead, go back to the places to live..
The keep the bow and arrow and kiss their wife and kids..

Raththa karaipadindha sooriyan..
ManjjaL-aai yezhundhu vandhaan..
Vetti yerindha thalai otti
mundam-aanavan nimirndhu nindraan…

VilluKuL.. aayiram AmbugaL paaindhana..
udalai saera.. Kurudhi aruvi yezhundhana..

saaga pirandha en padaigal..
vaazhum idaththukku nadandhaargaL..
villu ambugaLai vaiththu..
manaivikku muththam kuduthaargaL..

In this land of peace & prosperity..
Today there is a sense of vengence and distaste..
The massacre at Kalinga..
cannot be “re-written” (written in reverse) by a poet..
What a pity!!

seLippum sirippum niraindha naattil..
indru-oru kasappum veruppum nigazhgiradhae..
Kalinga-thil naDanadha kaLangathai
kavigyanaal thiruppi yezhudha mudiyaadhae…

Aiyoo..

O Buddha! the great!
Why did you wake up soo late!!
O Siddha.. the thinker!
I am ready to follow non-violence right now!!

Budhdhanae.. Budhdhane..
Arindha Budhdhanae…
YenakkuL yezhuvardharkku
yaen iththanai thaamadham..

Sidhdhane Sidhdhane..
Sindhiththa Sidhdhane..
Ahimsaiyai “thozhuvadharkku”
innodi-yae sammadham…
