Hi All,

Wish you all a very happy new year 2014. Let the new year provide opportunities for us to seek and learn and follow our dreams. Today we have Priyanka, co-founder of India Book Store – http://www.indiabookstore.net/, talking about her dream initiative!

Me: Sundar Rajan G S
PG: Priyanka Gupta

Me: Hi Priyanka, Welcome to Coffee With Sundar. Tell us about yourself and IndiaBookStore? How big is your team now?

PG: Thanks Sundar for inviting me for this interview, I am as excited as celebs on ‘Koffee with Karan’ 🙂
About me, I am an IITKanpur alumni (2005 batch). I have worked in 4 different large and mid-size companies, till last year when I took the responsibility of IndiaBookStore as Co-founder in August 2012.

IndiaBookStore is a book search engine, that aims to provide users complete information about books. Users can search for books, compare prices across Indian online stores, checkout store ratings, read book reviews, know about book authors, catch latest news about book launches, read interesting articles around literary world and much more. We actually dream to become the go-to destination for bibliophiles.

As of now, the team consists of a Content Lead, Social Media Manager, about 50 freelance writers. We are also looking for Software Engineers to join the team.

Me: How can the portal help budding authors in marketing their work?

PG: We can review their books, though authors need to be ready for a critical review as our reviewers are quite honest and give their real opinion of the book. We also arrange for book promotional contests on our website or Facebook or Twitter. We have seen pretty overwhelming participation in these contests.

Me: Your team has interviewed quite a few budding and well known authors. Name 5 authors you look forward to interviewing for your blog.

PG: Arundhati Roy, Chetan Bhagat, J.K.Rowling, Jhumpa Lahiri, Salman Rushdie.

Me: You host contests very frequently. What sort of impact do these have?

PG: These contests have a multi-directional impact
1. Our regular visitors can find something exciting on our website every day, since we almost always have contests going on;
2. New authors and independent publishers get a valuable platform to announce their presence and gain publicity.
3. Widen our audience and create a buzz about IndiaBookStore. It’s a win-win situation for all. The participation in these contests ranges from 100-400 users (organic). And not to mention, our contest prizes range from a recent released book, to Flipkart GiftVouchers to Kindle. 🙂

Me: What are the competitive products in the market which cater to the similar target audience and What makes IBS different from them?

PG: There are quite a few price comparison websites. IndiaBooKStore is different because it only deals with a single product – Books. Our website is optimized for book searches, which makes it faster and more accurate than other similar websites.

Me: What is your biggest challenge?

PG: My biggest challenge (I think it would be the same for most of the startups) is to build a strong team. Most of the talented individuals are either looking for ‘secured’ jobs in big companies or they are highly paid. And both of these things are something startups can’t offer. So, If anyone reading this is interested in taking up a challenging role in a growing startup, get in touch with us at jobs@indiabookstore.net 🙂

Me: What is your advice for Indian youngsters trying to pursuing their dreams?

PG: I am a dreamer myself, and tell everyone to dream high, so high that they break the boundaries around you. So if you have a dream and are passionate about it, you will find ways to make it true. Just keep your eyes open and chase the opportunities.

Me: Thanks Priyanka! Nice to meet you and know you. Wish you good luck with your initiatives.
