Saptha Padhi

23 October 2010 6 Comments

Hi All..

This is my 21st Poem.. My 3rd consecutive poem about marriage rituals.. But the exciting part about the poem is that.. it is a translation from a kannada song.. My first ever attempt at translating a song..

Often, people think that Maangalya Dharanam is the most important part of the wedding.. But from the ritual point of view, Saptha Padhi – The 7 steps which the bride and the groom take around the holy Agni (Fire God), making 7 promises or prayers – is the most important part of the marriage.. It is only after this combined prayer and mutual promise that they are considered husband and wife.. From my research (which was obviously needless! :P), I found out that different sources give different meanings for each of the seven steps.. but in the end.. they all cover more or less the same thing..

The song I translated is from a kannada movie SapthaPadi and the singer of this song is none other than the legendary Raj Kumar – The Annavaru of Kannada film industry. I have tried to maintain the same tone for the poem..

Saptha Padhi

Iruvarum serndhu yaaththirai thodanga..
Hari-dhaan saakshi yenbaen..
Mudhal padi-yai yeduththu vaipaen..
Swarga samaanamaai sugam tharuvaayana..
Kai koopi thozhuvaen..
Irandaam padi-yai yeduththu vaipaen..

Moondru kaalathillum.. orey paadhayil..
Un snehidhanaai nadapaen..
Moondraam padi-yai yeduththu vaipaen..
Paasam.. moham.. sukha dukkathillum..
Paadhi pagirndhukoLvaen..
Naalaam padi-yai yeduththu vaipaen..

Agyaanathil-irundhu mukthi adaya..
Gyaana-deepam yaeththi vaipaen…
Aindhaam padiyai yeduththu vaipaen..
Aaru rutugaLil aadum iyarkaiyai..
Varavaerka solvaen..
Aaraam padi-yai yeduththu vaipaen..

Sapta rushigaLai manadhil Nenaiththu..
Vaazhthida vaendikoLvaen..
Aezhaam padi-yai yeduththu vaipaen..
Nam aezhu janmathin anubandhaththai..
Saptha padhiyil yeduththu vaipaen..
Kalaiyae.. un adiyai yeduththu vaipaen..

Here is the meaning of all the 7 steps..

To start our new journey, I shall keep the first step forward..
For the marital pleasures, I place the second foot ahead..

Iruvarum serndhu yaaththirai thodanga..
Haridhaan saakshi yenbaen..
Mudhal padi-yai yeduththu vaipaen..
Swarga samaanamaai sugam tharuvaayana..
Kai koopi thozhuvaen..
Irandaam padi-yai yeduththu vaipaen..

For all three times of the day, I will walk with you as your companion and place your third step ahead.. (The three times refers to the morning to noon, noon to evening and evening to night..- The pratha, madhyama and saayah)
I shall equally take part in all 4 emotions.. The love, the passion, the happiness and the sadness and place the forth step ahead..

Moondru kaalathillum.. orey paadhayil..
Un snehidhanaai nadapaen..
Moondraam padi-yai yeduththu vaipaen..
Paasam.. moham.. sukha dukkathillum..
Paadhi pagirndhukoLvaen..
Naalaam padi-yai yeduththu vaipaen..

I will keep the fifth step ahead and promise that.. We shall light the lamp of knowledge together and move away from ignorance…
I will request the nature which dances with 6 seasons to invite us.. And place the sixth step..

Agyaanathil-irundhu mukthi adaya..
Gyaana-deepam yaeththi vaipaen…
Aindhaam padiyai yeduththu vaipaen..
Aaru rutugaLil aadum iyarkaiyai..
Varavaerka solvaen..
Aaraam padi-yai yeduththu vaipaen..

I will think of the 7 rishis.. Worship them for the well wishes and put forward the 7th step..
I promise you of a relationship which lasts 7 Janmas (7 life times) by placing these 7 steps..

Sapta rushigaLai manadhil nenaiththu..
Vaazhthida vaendikoLvaen..
Aezhaam padi-yai yeduththu vaipaen..
Nam aezhu janmathin anubandhaththai..
Saptha padhiyil yeduththu vaipaen..
Kalaiyae.. un adiyai yeduththu vaipaen..

O the lady who glows like an art, I shall walk the journey of your feet..

    Hey Sundar,

I could make out some 40-50% of the poem. But I can still say you’ve translated it really well. Great work man!
